We all want our children to do their best, to excel, to not fail.  Somewhere down deep, we want them to be better than others…even though we know we shouldn’t. We don’t mind them in the spotlight…when it is good.

Trophy Child Review

We think our kids are pretty great…and we should be proud of our children.  We sometimes think… “Wow, we have done a great job with our kids“. That is…when they are doing well and behaving right.

We don’t want others to see the real us, our real kids…you know, the meltdowns over candy, the attitudes, the rolling of the eyes. We want to look good as parents, right?

In our society, everyone is concerned about what school your children attend, what college they plan to go to, what sports they are playing, how well their grades are…performance, performance, performance.  What happened to kids being kids and being creative? Now, everyone is put into a mold and on a track for life.

Trophy Child: Saving Parents from Performance….Preparing Children for something Greater than Themselves is a new book that addresses these issues. This isn’t just another how to parenting book. This book will make you examine yourself and is a gut check. What are your personal motives as a parent?

Saving Parents From Performance, Preparing Children for Something Greater than themselves

From the Back Cover {Because this explains it so well}:

The Anti-Tiger Mom Book:

Do you cringe when your kids fight in public because it makes you look bad? Do you find yourself helping too much with homework because you want the teacher to be impressed? Do you secretly take credit for your child’s dance recital, soccer win, or spelling bee crown? You might be in danger of vanity parenting.
Vanity parenting happens when our culture’s obsession with performance leads us to form expectations for our kids based on the world’s standards, not on the Bible. As a result, our children try to meet our emotional needs instead of growing into the calling God has for them.

Trophy Child will help you create a home where your children find success in following their heavenly Father’s leading for them—and you know the joy of seeing your children embrace their full potential as children of God.

Trophy Parent?

I never really thought about that one until this book. There are several types of trophy parents and the author asks questions that make you take a look at yourself as a parent. Are you…
The Vanity Parent
The Perfection Parent
The Competitive Parent
The Return of Investment Parent
The Gifted Parent
The Companion Parent
The Rescue Parent

Hmmm….you will learn a lot about yourself in this book. And you thought it was about your child. 🙂

In addition to examining your motives as a parent, you will see real life situations that the author shares. You will learn more about the transitioning from each stage and receive Godly wisdom as to how to prepare and move to the next stage. We are ultimately preparing to send them out into the world.

One of my favorite parts of this book is the 26 Fun Family Devotionals using each letter of the alphabet, matched it with an animal, object or nature lesson in the Bible, key words,  scripture and talking points. Simple and to the point and very important for the character growth of the whole family. We have been using these and plan to make a devotional book out of them for our sons. He does a great job at reminding us how important it is to use whatever small amount of time and make it count in this area.

I also loved the focus on prayer~ especially the prayer for evil. I am not sure we are aware of how evil our world is and how effective prayer is against it.

I also loved the reminder of how important it is to keep your marriage strong. Who comes first in your home?  It is easy to have a kid-centered home, but he helps you in this area.

I want my children to be successful in the Kingdom of God, doing the Lord’s work. I don’t want to focus on how successful they will be in what is important in the eyes of man. Trophy Child is a great tool to help on the journey.
