I used to think legacy was something you left behind. A name on a building, maybe, or a story your grandchildren tell one day. Something that happens after you’re gone.

I don’t think that anymore.

This past year and a half, caring for my mom has taught me that legacy isn’t only what we leave behind. I have also seen that in my parents life. I also talk about that as the chapter in my new book. It’s what we’re building right now, in the middle of the mess and Hospice and the decisions nobody prepares you for. Legacy is showing up. It’s the phone calls, the paperwork, the hard conversations about what happens next. It’s the exhaustion, loneliness, uncertainty. It’s faithfulness in the small, unglamorous moments that nobody sees.

Somewhere in the middle of this season, I started paying closer attention to how prepared, or unprepared, families really are for the moments that matter most. I’ve sat with people scrambling to find a will that doesn’t exist. I’ve watched families argue over decisions that could have been settled calmly, years earlier, with one honest conversation and a little paperwork.

That’s part of why I do the work I do now, alongside everything else here at The Encouraging Home. Reminding you to take care of you… because I forgot that while I was taking care of everyone else and am rebuilding my health. Helping families put life insurance in place isn’t about fear, it’s about making sure the people you love aren’t left scrambling the way I’ve seen so many families scramble. Helping families access affordable legal protection isn’t about expecting the worst either, it’s about being able to handle a hard moment with a plan already in hand, instead of panic.

Stewardship, at its heart, means taking care of what’s been entrusted to you, faithfully, even in seasons that are hard and unglamorous. Your health. Your family. Your finances. Your business. Your legacy. None of it happens by accident. It happens because someone decided to be prepared, to be present, and to be faithful with what they’d been given.

If you’ve been putting off a conversation about life insurance, or you’ve told yourself you’ll deal with a will “someday,” I’d gently encourage you not to wait for a crisis to make you start. I didn’t get to choose the timing of my own season of caregiving. Most of us don’t get to choose ours either. But we can choose to be ready.

If any of this stirs something in you, I’d love to talk. You can explore life insurance options here, learn more about affordable legal protection here, or just reach out and start the conversation.

Legacy isn’t only what we leave behind. It’s what we build, faithfully, one ordinary day at a time.
